Glass Melting

By Chad Phillips
Getting Started
When someone says blowing glass, what comes into your head? One of the things many people think of when they hear that is probably someone making a vase or a nice chandelier. The techniques used in all the processes can be some of the most strenuous movements that you repeat again and again until the piece is completely done in his or her eyes. There are many objects in our day-to-day life that many people do not realize were handmade by a person blowing air through a tube that is heated up with a flame.

The Necessities
When starting out, you want to get a torch that will be easy to work with at first. The smaller style torches would be the easiest to start out on, because of how small the flame is. There is not much to the torch except the mechanic parts. Second, you will want to have plenty of clear tubing to be able to practice as much as you want to. Many people will want to buy sample packs of glass tubing because then they can get multiple different colors and see what colors they want to work with the most. You will need to have a kiln. A kiln is the most important part of glass blowing. The kiln will heat the piece up to unsafe temperatures, which makes the piece stronger and more reliable when handled by someone. Most people think when someone is in the process of melting the glass down it is extremely easy. I do beg to differ, this is probably one of the hardest hobbies someone could possibly throw themselves into doing.
Hoping on the Torch
There is a lot that goes into making something out of glass, especially with the techniques and how to maneuver the glass tubing into a work of art. This is where many people will give up on their dreams to make a glass object into a piece of their own art. Glass blowing can be and will be one of the most intense hobbies someone could have, not because of the open flame but because of the amount of molten hot glass and sharp shards of glass. It is a dangerous hobby, even if you blink wrong, you can really mess yourself up. You will want to keep practicing till you have made it what you want to do.

I've selected links to show you more insights into about glass blowing, you will learn the starting techniques on how you can melt glass into certain objects you want. Glass blowing is probably one of the most intricate hobbies someone could have. Having to do many steps just to get a simple piece can take hours all the way to a couple days. It all the depends on how complex the piece is. Many people would not even attempt to create anything with glass, due to the risk factors. You are using a torch that reaches over 1,500+ degrees. I have seen first hand what a torch can do at that temperature. That is probably one of the main factors that detours people from doing it as a hobby.

Tennis and My Life

By Taylor Graalman

Tennis has been a great sport and asset in my life. It has blessed me with the chance to do something with myself. I have Played tennis from when I was a little child to high school and college.

When I was around 5 years old, I was fortunate enough to play on a stadium court in front of a crowd of people. In the picture below, Wayne Bryan, father of the most winning doubles team in history, is asking me questions. I had been playing tennis for a few years at this point. This really was the spark of my love for tennis and how it has shaped my life.
Myself wearing a MTSU shirt next to Wayne Bryan

In the picture above, you see that I am currently wearing a Middle Tennessee State University shirt. After what happened, I was beginning to make connections. I was fortunate enough to become the first live mascot for this college. I was 8 years old at the time and was always around the guys on the team. They had an amazing season where they made it into the NCAA Tournament.
Tennis at Siegel Middle School
While at Siegel Middle School in Murfreesboro, I was fortunate to play at the number one spot out of six and I would meet lifelong friends. We had a stellar team, winning the team tournament all three years. We were one of the best teams to come through middle school in Rutherford County history.
Tennis Tournament for the USTA in Huntsville, Alabama

During my time at Siegel High School, I played in many tournaments around the South traveling to such states as Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi and Alabama for the United States Tennis Association League. Like life, these tournaments had many ups and downs. The best part was always learning something new about myself good or bad. I won more matches than I lost, but the loses always stuck with me more. If anyone is interested in signing up for the USTA and play in tournaments, visit this. https://www.usta.com/

Playing for Siegel High School
While I was at Siegel, I was fortunate to play number one for all four years. I was coached by Jeff Martin, who also taught me how to be a better person on and off the court. Siegel and I were three-time state semifinalists. I made it to state competition as an individual four times and winning a quarterfinalist twice, and a semifinalist twice. Also, I was fortunate enough to be The Daily News Journal Male Tennis Player of the Year for three years in a row. It really gave me confidence and helped me accomplish what I did this summer.

Coaching in Connecticut
This summer, largely due to my connection as a mascot for MTSU, I was fortunate enough to get a job as a tennis pro in Connecticut. I taught many different people from young to old and made great connections. As a tennis pro, I worked six days a week from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. It was not an easy job as most might think. I learned more this summer than I did my freshman year of college.

For anyone wanting to improve their game and to win more matches, key to greater improvement is to increase footwork and focus. When I was playing a match where I was losing 6-2, 5-2 that is what I did to create a comeback. I have seen plenty reach new heights by increasing these two simple things. Here is a link to improve your consistency. http://www.active.com/tennis/articles/10-steps-to-improve-your-consistency

That is just a few ways how tennis has helped to shape my life. Like a tennis match, life has many ups and downs. I have been fortunate and blessed to be able to live the life I want because of this sport. Its Never Too Late to Improve Your Lifestyle

By Jacob Rabasca

Health promotion is helping people change their lifestyle, environment and social norms to move forward toward a state of optimal health. Only 10 percent of the United States’ population can be found in the top level of wellness. Everyone else is found in the lower two levels of Health and Wellness. There is a difference between all of these categories. Health is the state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and Wellness is an integrated and dynamic level of functioning oriented toward maximizing potential. As a whole, we need to push ourselves and get past the second level. The more people that achieve the third level, the faster every one of us will grow together and become a healthier people.

Life expectancy in the U.S. is 77.9 years, 75.4 for men and 80.4 for women. Women are expected to live five years longer than a man the same age. One reason why, is because women are way less likely to be daredevils as they grow up. Unintentional injuries are the third leading cause of death in men and the sixth with women. Males also develop slower in the womb than females do. They are more likely to die from underdevelopment of the lungs or brain. Men also hold most of their stress in their chest and don’t have many social ties, while women reach out and talk to others.

The top five causes of death for all ages are heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic respiratory disease, and motor accidents. Almost all of those can be avoided by changing our lifestyles and helping others get to where you are physically and emotionally. Heart disease is commonly found in those with an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, being overweight, and smoking. Replace those with a healthy diet, daily exercise and an alternative habit to smoking, and you’ll prevent heart disease. Everyone knows that the best way to keep a healthy heart is healthy food and cardio. Eat some oatmeal for breakfast and take a jog every morning, start your day right and carry your healthy decisions throughout your day.

It’s overlooked that fitness isn’t only about physical wellness, but it is also about the wellness of our mind and emotions. In order to be in the top level of health, we have to have physical and emotional stability, and we have to have our lives together in order help others. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in teens. If people in our communities were more involved with each other and were more about helping one another, we wouldn’t have the issues and news that we do today. People need other people in life. We get through things together.

We forget to realize that we make the decisions that get us where we are. We should only worry about the things that we can control. We can physically get better by changing what and how we eat. We can also hit the gym and exercise daily. We can help anyone with their problems just by offering them someone to talk to. We can be that person that lifts them up out of the hole they are in. It’s all of our choices to make this world a better place.

All of this information is knowledge I have attained in my wellness class by taking notes and reading out text, “A Wellness Way of Life” by Gwen Robbins, Debbie Powers, and Sharon Burgess. The Huffington Post was also very helpful providing articles that explain the reasons women outlive men. Some of this information is my prior knowledge from past experiences while I was fascinated with health and physique.

I spend a lot of time thinking, most of the time I am thinking about something that needs a solution. A few months ago I was depressed and wasn’t really trying to do anything for anyone, or even myself. Then one day I looked at myself in the mirror, and I thought about everything I had been doing. I wasn’t in the best shape physically and I wasn’t too happy with things in my life.

It hit me that I needed to change. I then made the goal to get a better physique and get myself to think happier. I have been going to the gym and have been working out at home. I have made it a point to read more and expand my ways of thinking. I now read philosophical books that help me understand more about myself and the world around me. I want to be the best version of myself, and I won’t stop working on myself until I feel I have achieved that.

The Growing Phenomenon of E-Sports

By Samuel Pitts

Imagine a stadium filled by an audience of 21,000 people. What if the audience is so large, it even fills up entire the city blocks around the stadium, hundreds of thousands of people all coming to attend one event? What if this hugely popular event only happened once a year?
What event has this many fans and only happens once a year? The answer is not the Super Bowl. It’s not the NBA Finals, nor the World Series. It’s for a video game. It’s an e-sport (electronic sport)  event for a popular video game called League of Legends. It’s sponsored by major companies around the globe and every League of Legends fan dreams of attending this event.
Stable Center during the League of Legends World Championship Finals in 2013

The Staples Center was filled with excitement and screaming fans as the new League of Legends World Champions raised the Summoner’s Cup in 2013. The stadium tickets were sold out and every seat was filled. The broadcast of the championship was also shown online around the globe, rendering a massive 32 million viewership with a peak of more than 8.5 million fans watching simultaneously. To put those numbers into perspective, the NBA Finals in 2013 had an average viewership of 17.7 million, while the World Series had an average viewership of 14.9 million. This means that the viewership of an e-sport event had nearly twice the viewership of either the NBA Finals or the World Series!
An e-sport is form of competition that is competed on electronic devices and systems, most notably video games. As a gamer myself, I’ve seen the e-sports community grow substantially over the past few years. What was once a community deemed with the stereotype of caucasian males living in his parent’s basement is now a flourishing environment with millions of fans from several countries around the world. It brings a whole new culture to society. And at the center of all e-sports is a global, young, and diverse community of many types of gamers; professional and casual, enthusiasts, collaborators, and competitive players all have a spirited passion for playing video games.
One article believes the system of e-sports as well as the input of gamers are intervened by human-computer interfaces. Let’s not forget that the gamer community was already large, but without the proper means of connecting to one another it increased at a slow and steady rate. As technology continues to grow and become more impactful on our daily lives, it allows people to have easier communication from far distances. Not only do video games bring such communication and connection with others, but it also enhances it. Professional players that travel to different countries often have to deal with some sort of “language barrier.” But with additional features that some video games provide, it provides assistance to pass through the language barrier.
World of Warcraft was once the most popular video game in the world, having a peak of over 12 millions subscribed players in 2010. Although not known for being competitive professionally, it was a catalyst to the rise of esports. But not all popular games last forever. Just like having a celebrity be in the news for their “five minutes of fame,” video games have their time in the spotlight as well, although it’s usually limited. World of Warcraft has since dropped over 4 million subscribed players and continues to drop. Gamers are constantly changing their predilection for video games, but that does not mean the community dies out. Instead, it continues to grow as new games are created and played casually and competitively. The Super Smash Brothers series, League of Legends, Counter Strike, Dota 2, Starcraft II, Overwatch, Vainglory, Call of Duty are only a few games that are played competitively with several independent organizations competing to be the best just like any other competition.
Graph of Subscribed World of Warcraft played since 2007
League of Legends has taken over the video game industry and is currently sitting at number one for the most popular video game played with over 100 million active users each month. League of Legends is what is known as Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA for short) in which 10 random players (around the same skill level) across the continent are put into a single match split into two teams of five. The end goal is to reach the enemy base and destroy the nexus, which is essentially a structure that represents the connection between the characters being played and the players. Once the nexus is destroyed, the connection is severed and the game ends. On top of the casual gameplay, The game also provides aesthetic features for a fee that allows users to customize the characters and their looks. The League of Legends community also uses its visionaries to often collab with musical performers, actors, and artists within the community to create marvelous works of art showing a true display of fan dedication. League of Legends is a constantly evolving game. There are regular bi-weekly updates for the game for balance changes and gameplay changes. It’s a game that continues to make itself feel new and I believe that is why the game only continues to grow worldwide. I’ve played this game for over five years now with over 2000 hours of gameplay; it’s fair to say that I have some credibility. It’s mind-boggling to think of the amount of growth and adaptation this game has had with the huge active user surge over the past five years.
The stage during the League of Legends World Championship Finals in 2013
Competitive League of Legends is by far the most recognizable e-sport competition on an international level. There five major professional leagues in competitive League of Legends: North American League of Legends Championship Series (NA LCS), European League of Legends Championship Series LCS (EU LCS), League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK), League of Legends Pro League (LPL) [China],  League Master Series (LMS) [Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao]. Teams in each respective region compete against each other over the span of the year for a chance to qualify for the League of Legends World Championship. Only three teams from each region are able to qualify aside from the LMS where only two teams are able to qualify. There are also two slots available for the “Wildcard Regions,” which are lesser regions around the world that participate in a tournament to qualify.
The players spend several hours every single day practicing game mechanics, reaction time, hand-eye coordination, mental stability, etc. Professional gamers have to sacrifice a lot out of their lives to remain in the professional scene. Most professionals don’t have much of a social life outside of their respective game and almost all of them are not in relationships. Contrary to what may be the popular belief, they don’t have a social life nor relationship because they aren’t able to, but because they choose to. For a professional player, any time that is not spent practicing is time that other professionals are using perfect their mechanics and become more superior at the game. NFL player Chris Kluwe has previously stated that if physical athletes could train and practice all day, they would. He also stated how good communication within the team while playing the game is a major key to reach victory.
Chris Kluwe during an interview with Riot Games about e-sports
And mentality is such a huge part of the industry. Just like how sport athletes have drama and pressure to perform on game day, the same effect takes place in the minds of the professional gamers as well. It’s also good to remember that social media and online forums are what little social lives these players have. That being said, they often have to deal with criticism and other harsh language that may not be said face to face, but because society acts differently when people are behind a glowing screen. E-sport organizations have begun to invest in sports and performance psychologists for players to keep a healthy, stable, productive, and competitive mindset.
The fans of e-sports have been constantly thanked by the video game companies for providing massive support for their games. And they should. It’s blatantly known in the e-sports community that the fans are the sole reason for the games progression to the status it has reached. Fans from both sports and e-sports celebrate their favorite teams and will cheer as loud as possible for their team to win. Both events are just as exciting either way. So is a fan of a football team sitting in the bleachers of a football stadium really different from a fan of competitive League of Legends sitting in a stadium?

E-sports and Sports fans cheering on their favorite teams.

E-sports is a brand new phenomenon that will on continue to grow as time goes on. It comes with a plethora of possibilities that can influence the world as we see it. Now it’s up to us to accept this new culture as a society and continue to adapt as newer cultures appear down the road. Thanks for reading.

Top 10 Photos for Your Big Day

By Kiersten Hull
Hey ladies! I know that sometimes planning which pictures you want and need can be a little stressful so I recently interviewed several photographers and brides who say you need these photos on your big day! Following are examples:

1)    The way the groom looks at you when you first come down that aisle is number one in my books.
2)    Holding hands as you say your “I DO’S”.
3)    YOUR DRESS! You have to get all the details of your dress because the big day is the only day you will wear it.
4)    The bridal party…You want to be able to remember all the gorgeous people who made your big day happen.
5)    THE KISS! Enough said.
6)    Being excited after you are officially announced as “MR. & MRS.”
7)    Candid photos are a must to have on your wedding day. You want all the laughs and tears captured.
8)    The way he looks at you (pictures like this are to die for).
9 & 10) Simple and elegant pictures of you and your groom.

Sarah Davenport talks about how a photographer has a lot to do with you getting the best shots on your wedding day and how you can do that: “Being excited and complementary is incredibly important in getting a shot because you're fueling how they feel which reflects how they look.

It can be difficult to find the balance between being bossy and being a director. If you need people to be somewhere, tell them, but be careful not to be too rude and commanding. I highly suggest meeting with the coordinator and bride weeks before the wedding so you can make the schedule together. Know how much time you need to get bridal portraits, bridal party shots and family shots, that way everyone knows when they need to be ready and things flow better. Basically, work together with the coordinator, it's their job to get people where they need to be, it doesn't fall all on the photographer’s shoulders.”

A few examples the brides say they do not want:    https://www.facebook.com/kiersten.hull
1.)   Shots of the same photo just in different angles because then you have the same photo just in a different angle.
2.)   Some brides I have talked to say that do not want a picture of them eating.
3.)   Some say they don’t want pictures of drunk people.
I’m sure there are many more do’s and dont’s and if I or someone I know come up with anymore I will get back to everyone.

Music is Healing

By Sarah Schramm
Have you ever been driving down the road when a song comes on the radio that fits you perfectly? If you are anything like me, you replay that song as much as you can to cope. We all have struggles that we face every day, whether it is school, work, family or even friends. Music is the one thing that can comfort you into knowing you are not alone.
Did a boy break your heart? Listen to any of Taylor Swift’s songs, and it will make you feel better or cry more.  https://youtu.be/D1Xr-JFLxik. There are so many songs in this world to be there for you. Teenagers play a big role in the music industry because we use it in our everyday lives. Music doesn’t even have to mean anything to you. The song could just be a song that you enjoy, and that is okay too.
Music allows every person to bring out their creativity even when they don’t realize it. Now when most people think of creativity, they think of pretty colors and paintings. However, in music there are different genres to suit everyone. If you don’t like slow music, try that loud rock song. If rock is too loud and obnoxious, try a country song. Don’t listen to a song just because it is popular. Listen to the song because you like it. If no one likes one of your favorite songs, who cares? Music will only benefit you if you allow it to. My personal favorite music is country because the songs are about stories or life lessons I can easily relate too.
Some people think of music as entertainment in which it can be. However, it has been proved to be healthy for you. I know this is hard to believe, but it is true! An analysis of five studies on music for depression concluded that music therapy is not only acceptable for depressed patients, but it actually improves their moods. https://www.healthychildren.org/English/healthy-living/emotional-wellness/Pages/Music-and-Mood.aspx. For example, If you are feeling very down and a child comes up to you singing “You are my sunshine” wouldn’t that put a smile on your face. Music can also help out businesses with people spending more money. Grocery stores play music to make people feel comfortable and to take their time. Dental offices sometimes play music so their patients won’t be nervous.
Neuroscientist Dr. Petr Janata of the University of California said, “There’s something about music engaging in musical activities that appear to be very stimulating for the brain and body.  https://newsinhealth.nih.gov/2010/january/feature1.htm. Music also impacts education. For example, learning the ABCs song is very helpful by making it easy for children to learn the alphabet. It’s very easy to remember something when there is a catchy tune to it.
We may not think of all these things when a song plays, but that is the beauty of it. Music is healing as long as we allow it. It’s important to always listen and surround yourself with positive uplifting songs. Billy Joel said, “I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”  https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/b/billyjoel133275.html
My name is Sarah Rose Schramm. I am a college student at Motlow State Community College. Music has changed my life, and I know it can change yours, too! Without music, life would be very dull and time wasted. If you are new to the music industry, here are some of my favorites. I love “Thunder in the Rain” by Kane Brown. It always puts me in a great mood. https://youtu.be/deYe_h9CM8c. Sometimes when I need to calm down and clear my head, I listen to Classical music. https://youtu.be/Fnzn-3oXEUI. The song that has really hit the charts this week is Closer by The chainsmokers. https://youtu.be/PT2_F-1esPk?list=RDPT2_F-1esPk.

Modern Pop Music and Its Lack of Creativity

                                                                         By Brennan Cox

Throughout the years, pop music has impacted the world with its catchy hooks, its unique fashion

style, and originality. It all started with the Beatles’ first LP, “Please Please Me”, which was released
in the ‘60s. Artists like the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Prince, and David Bowie (who experimented
with both pop and rock), had something to add to the world of music: Originality.

These musicians wrote songs that no one had ever heard before. Michael Jackson Invented the
“Moonwalk” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6pomaq30Gg). David Bowie and Prince had an
eye-popping fashion style and wrote such unforgettable songs like “Purple Rain”
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHxmctgKFL8) by Prince, and “Heroes”

Prince
David Bowie

Over the years, modern pop music has copied other artists such as Prince and Michael Jackson,
and it has grown to be more about an image than about the music. Everything sounds the same,
leaving nothing new to add to the world of music. This is mostly due to the music industry
and the amount of control it puts on their artists. The industry relies more on pitch perfect singing,
image, sex, drugs, and partying more than being creative. For example, the lyrics to the song
“Talking Body” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzRyxGBGiAE) by Tove Lo says, “Put your body
on me, if you love me, babe, we’ll f--k real late, on and on and on.”. This song contains an
electronically produced back track and a simple, catchy hook.
Another example is the song “Can’t Feel My Face” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEI4qSrkPAs) by the Weekend. This song romanticizes cocaine.

The industry has grown to be anything but creative. As long as they make money, then they’ll keep
enforcing easy pop music. If you listen to songs on the radio, you will find that most songs sound
pretty much the same. Simple, catchy, and easy.
Prince explains his views towards modern pop music, stating:

“There might be music that sounds like me, but what good is that? You're essentially in the
feedback loop. It’s a bad time for music in general. There’s not a lot of pop music in the mainstream
that makes you feel scared, that makes you wonder what’s happening.”

This helps to prove that pop music is not pushing boundaries, leaving it with as much nutrition as a
McDonald’s hamburger.

Aside from the lack of creativity and originality in the major labels, the indie scene has been
starting to overwhelm the music industry. In the indie scene, artists are free to do whatever they
want musically. There are no boundaries. Artists like Vampire Weekend, Chance the Rapper, and
Macklemore
Macklemore have jumped on the indie band wagon, allowing them

to create and produce whatever they want, while still obtaining

massive fame without labels controlling their musical style.

Spotify has made a contribution to independent artists, allowing

musicians to get noticed and make a bit of money  without the

power of a major label. http://www.ibtimes.com/.

Chance the Rapper has not signed up with a music label because he does not believe in them. Not
signing to a label has allowed him to push musical boundaries (http://www.thisisinsider.com/why-hance-the-rapper-refuses-to-sign-a-record-label-2016-6).
The only way to listen to his record, “Coloring Book”
Chance the Rapper

The indie scene is being renovated and is starting to grow with

help from businesses like Spotify, which BMI has teamed up with
(https://bandcamp.com/), and Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/). Maybe one day businesses
like Spotify will overthrow the power of major labels.
