     Attention Students, Faculty and Staff… The annual Motlow Smyrna Talent Show is coming up on April 25, and we need you! 

     TALENT: Consider performing as an actor, comedian, dancer, musician, poet, singer, songwriter, storyteller or visual artist.

     VOLUNTEER: Invest in the Motlow community by helping out. There will be a need for welcomers, organizers, promoters, artists, food servers, and more. (You can earn community service hours for TNPromise and Tennessee Reconnect).

     If you are interested in performing or volunteering, please contact Professor Charles Whiting at cwhiting@mscc.edu.

     FYI… The event will occur from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 25 (Thursday). Admission is free, and lunch will be provided.

Auditions to Occur for Holiday Traditions Show and Christmas Film Festival

         SMYRNA – Students, faculty, administrators and staff are invited to share their talents during a festive holiday show and film festival on Dec. 4 (Wednesday) sponsored by the Smyrna Entertainment, Arts and Media Club (SEAM).

         The “Motlow Smyrna Holiday Traditions” show will recognize the traditions of holiday celebrations such as Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa with music, songwriting, storytelling, poetry, visual art, and dance. The show will occur in the MLA Lobby between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

         The "Motlow Smryna Christmas Film Festival" will celebrate the holiday season with the showing of original short student films and classic movies. The event will occur in AWJ 124 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. 

         Auditions for both events will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Nov. 14 and Nov. 21 (Thursdays) in MLA 124. Past performers are not required to audition. First Smyrna 'Write Here! Write Now! Open Mic to Occur Nov. 14

         SMYRNA -- "Write Here! Write Now!," a creative writer's workshop, will host its first Smyrna spoken word open mic from 2-4 p.m. on Nov. 14 (Thursday) in the MLA Lobby.

         Students, faculty members, and others will share their original writings in a wide range of genres. Attendance is free and open to everyone.

          The autumn 2019 "Write Here! Write Now!" creative writer's workshop will conclude at 2 p.m. on Dec. 5 and Dec. 7 in Room 203 of the Clayton Glass Library on the Moore County campus.

Fifteen Artists to Perform at Motlow Smyrna Talent Show on April 24

        SMYRNA, Tenn. – The second annual “Motlow Smyrna Talent Show” will feature performances by 15 artists from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. April 24 (Wednesday) in the Lobby of the MaryLou Apple Building.

        Students, as well as faculty, administrators and staff will present songs, instrumentals, poetry, comedy, and even a few magic tricks. Performers will include Nya Alexander, Megan Buzard, Damian Copeland, Robert Davenport, Bob Fitzgerald, Paige Hendrickson, Orlando McHenry, Robby Napier, Rachel Towle, Kolyn Vick, Montez Voorhies, and Charles Whiting.

        Elizabeth and Kevin Fitch will make a special opening appearance with a 15-minute instrumental performance at 11:30 a.m. Magician Brian Foley will entertain attendees with magic card tricks at a nearby table.

        The show will be emceed by English Professor/Comedian Nick Bush. Biff Kittii and Alara Bishop will handle sound.

        Members of the Smyrna Entertainment, Arts and Media Club have been planning the talent show since January, and they are excited to see it come to fruition. The show was created to give students and others the opportunity to share their talents with the Motlow Smyrna community.

SEAM Club President Alara Bishop expressed her excitement of having the opportunity to celebrate the organization’s becoming an official club at Motlow State Community College. The club also is a sponsor of the annual “Motlow Smyrna Holiday Show,” “Dance Across The Decades,” and the “Famous Communicator Speakers Series.” 

        “We hope the talent show will truly submerse us in the club community, and open the door for anyone interested in media, entertainment, etc.,” she said. “This is our chance to truly establish a prominent club for Mass Communications students and others who are interested in the arts.”

Smyrna Entertainment, Arts and Media Club Hosts Successful Talent Show

         SMYRNA, Tenn. – The Smyrna Entertainment, Arts and Media (SEAM) Club hosted the Motlow Smyrna Talent Show in the lobby of the MaryLou Apple Building on April 26 to great success.

         The talent show was an opportunity for more than 10 students, faculty and administrators to display their talents to the Motlow community. These acts were not only musical, but also both visually artistic and poetic. Faculty and administrator participants included Professor Ben Jobe, Professor Bob Fitzgerald, Professor Charles Whiting, Professor Kevin Fitch, Academic Dean Elizabeth Fitch, and Librarian Paige Hendrickson.

         The students who performed a song were Cateland Gonzalez, Montez Voorhies, Megan Williams, and Desaree O’Donnell. Camille Cole read her original poetry, and Mary Hill and Manuel Martinez displayed their original visual artwork.

         The show was emceed by SEAM President Parker Shoemaker and Professor Nick Bush.

         The attendance at the talent show was substantial, with the lobby and lounge regularly being crowded with students, staff, administrators and family.

         “I was so happy and surprised to see how many came out to support both the faculty and the student performers,” Parker said about the crowd.

         The Motlow Smyrna Talent Show was put on by a team that included Alara Bishop (sound), Anthony Czelusniak (publicity), Manuel Martinez (graphic arts), Samantha Denny, Mary Hill, and Jacob Martin (production assistants), George Ciprich and Stan Temple (stage set-up), and Casey Chandler, Biff Kittii, and Mark Landrum (sound production/audiovisual).

         SEAM is Motlow Smyrna's official club for students who want to experience and discuss the different types of entertainment, arts and media.

Second Round of Talent Show Auditions to Occur April 10

        SMYRNA, Tenn. – The Smyrna Entertainment, Arts and Media Club (SEAM) is continuing its search for talented performers and artists to take the stage for the Motlow Talent Show on April 26.

 

        The talent show, hosted by SEAM, will take place in late April but will be holding its second round of auditions on April 10 (Tuesday) in Room 201 of the Marylou Apple Building starting at 3:30 p.m. SEAM asks that those who wish to audition RSVP Mass Communications Instructor Charles Whiting via email at cwhiting@mscc.edu . The auditions are open to everyone. The show lineup will be announced in mid-April.

 

 

        If it is not possible to audition in person, the club would like for students, faculty, administrators and staff to upload a clip of them performing their talent to YouTube and send the video link to Whiting.

 

        The types of talent that the club would like to see include singing, musical performances, songwriting, dance, poetry reading, storytelling, comedy and acting. The talent show will also include an art exhibition for those who would like to display their original artwork. Painting, sketches, woodworking, multi-media, knitting and other original works are welcome. To reserve a spot in the art exhibition, send Whiting a jpeg image with the details about the piece, such as type, size and other relevant information.

Fall Festival to Bring Pumpkins, Volleyball and Food to Motlow’s Smyrna Campus

            SMYRNA, Tenn. – Motlow’s Smyrna campus will host its Fall Festival on Oct. 31, providing plenty of activities to relieve midterm stress and accumulate Tennessee Promise service hours.

            Fall Festival will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the STAH Lobby and on the grassy areas between the two buildings on campus. Free activities such as pumpkin painting, a poetry session, cornhole, and volleyball will be available. There also will be a bake sale at the “Flavors of Fall” booth. Food trucks will be on hand to provide refreshments to participants.

            Despite the immense growth in the number of students attending Motlow, Fall Festival committee member Candace Grissom is confident that every student will have a chance to participate.

            “The faculty and staff have done an excellent job stepping up to help make this happen,” the English professor said.

            The Fall Festival is a great opportunity for students to earn hours toward their Tennessee Promise service requirements. Volunteers are needed for both set-up and cleanup of the four-hour event. Grissom says this will make it easier for the college’s busy landscaping staff. 

“We don’t want Motlow’s professional landscaping team cleaning up after the festival all by themselves,” she added.
