Welcome Back Motlow Students!

The faculty and staff are excited that you have chosen to continue your educational pursuits at our outstanding Community College.  We collectively encourage you to attend all classes whether on ground, virtual or online.  It’s important to your success that you attend your classes regularly.  This Fall 2020 Semester is unique due to COVID 19, and I want to remind each of you to practice proper social distancing, to wear a face mask that covers your nose and mouth, to submit your daily on ground assessment each day you come to campus, and to follow all the classroom and hallway guidelines.

Despite COVID 19, each of you can have an enriching semester so that you can obtain your goals for the future. I want to offer you some practices that will help you to be successful at the college level:

         1. - Attend, participate and do all assignments in each class.

         2. - Participate in class activities and class discussions.

         3. - Reach out to your instructor when you have a question or when you do not understand some classroom or textbook material.

         4. - Prepare for class ahead of time by reading or reviewing class materials.

Complete all assignments on time.

         5. - Set aside time to study, relax, exercise, and for family and friends.

         6. - Your Professors want you to excel, so build a great working relationship with them.

I wish each of you a successful Fall 2020 Semester. Remember to work hard, stay focused, complete your assignments, and have fun.  Learning is fun, and it will make a difference in your life.

Sincerely,

Dean Killough

Welcome Letter to Motlow Smyrna Students

Hello Students!

I want to welcome you to what I hope to be your best semester to date!  Speaking directly from the offices of the deans and speaking on behalf of our great faculty and staff, we are excited you have chosen Motlow to be a partner in your educational pursuit.

Smyrna Academic Dean Dr. Gregory Killough
What phenomenal growth and opportunities our Campus is experiencing.  For you returning students, you have witnessed this growth made manifest from groundbreaking to opening of Smyrna 3.  For you freshmen, you are seeing this through the enrollment of your friends and neighbors. State of the art classrooms, equipment and distant educational opportunities. A new library, new computer labs, new offices. I encourage you to avail yourself to the resources never before offered. I encourage you to seek resources not yet before you. I encourage you to create opportunities, set goals, and aspire for greatness as we walk together. Let us continue to be a campus and a community who are working together to ensure success and promote a standard of excellence.

In closing, let us master what is before us but not settle in complacency.

Have a wonderful Semester!

A Letter to Motlow Smyrna Students from Academic Dean Dr. Gregory N. Killough

Dear Students:

The Fall 2019 semester is now in full swing. It may still feel like summer outside, but midterms are just a few weeks away. Midterms begin on Oct. 4 and run through Oct. 10. As the new Dean at the Smyrna campus, I am really impressed with how friendly and compassionate the students are here at the Smyrna campus of Motlow State Community College. We have an outstanding faculty and staff wanting to help each of you have a successful Fall Semester.

I wanted to provide each of you with a few helpful reminders and/or suggestions on how to obtain the highest possible grade that you can in your courses.

1. Attend every class. It is important to be at every class and to be prepared.  Hearing the information directly from the instructor is paramount.

2. Be involved in the class. Ask questions, engage in discussions, engage in classroom activities.

3. Visit with your instructor before class, after class, or during office hours. It is important to seek help as soon as possible. You may need to schedule an appointment with your instructor.

4. Work with a study group that is focused and purposeful.

5. Use the tutoring centers or sessions early and often as they are free, and the help will keep you moving in the right direction.

6. Be involved in the campus life. Join clubs, groups, the SGA (Student Government). The more involved you are the more successful you will be.

7. Use all of the resources available to you: Student Success, Coaches, Counseling Support, Disability and Testing Services, Library, Campus Police, Font Office Staff, Financial Aid, and Instructors.

I hope that each of you will use the resources available to you so that you can have a successful Fall 2019 Semester.

The new building is almost complete, and we are planning to use it for Spring 2020 classes. The building is a state-of-the-art facility with new high-tech classrooms, new library, new bookstore, new student success area, new student collaborative spaces, and new offices for our instructors. It has many wonderful features that will allow the faculty and staff to continue to build on the quality of learning that they are already providing to you. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new building is set for Dec. 17, 2019.

In closing, I look forward to meeting each of you over the next two semesters. I am proud to be a part of the excellent team of faculty and staff here at the Smyrna campus of Motlow State Community College. I wish each of you a wonderful and successful Fall 2019 semester.

Sincerely,

Dr. Gregory N. Killough
